2008
18 year old school boy, Wayne Boyd, from Antrim Grammar School, is up for nominee, as a finalist for Autosport magazine’s, McLaren Autosport Award.

Wayne, from Templepatrick, Co Down, who won the British Formula Ford Championship, is hoping he can follow in the footsteps of previous winners, F1 drivers David Coulthard, Jenson Button and Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti.

Wayne said “The McLaren Autosport Award is one of the most important awards that a young driver can win and I’d be really honoured to be selected as one of the six finalists."

Racing driver manager, Chas Cole, who spotted Wayne’s talent last year said “With 16 wins this season, already Wayne has got the potential to go all the way, Lewis Hamilton...watch out!”

Wayne started in cadet karts in 2001, earning Best Newcomer award. In 2004 he won the Ulster Championship and was Scottish Championship runner-up. Winning the Ulster Championship again in 2005 he became a works kart driver and contested the Super 1 National JICA Championship 2006.

Wayne made the leap into cars by moving into Formula Ford in 2007, winning the Northern Irish FF1600 Championship at his first attempt, despite being the youngest driver in the field, winning many races. He then went on to qualify on pole position at Brands Hatch in the prestigious Formula Ford Festival 2007 and won his semi-final on his first visit to the circuit.

2008 British Formula Ford Champion Wayne Boyd has won the Formula Ford  Festival  (Duratec Class)  at  Brands  Hatch , 19 October 2008.  Wayne  dominated  the  opposition  in  his  class  this weekend, showing the field exactly why he is the one to beat on the road to the pinnacle of motorsport.
